UPDATE on this COAST to COAST bicycle ride ☀️🚴🏼♂️🏞 : Seeing puppies across the country is one of the perks of this journey. 🙂 This photo was taken in front of THE DUCK coffee / crepe shop in Wichita Falls, Texas (fantastic place). This is the starting point of the “HOTTER THAN HELL 100” bicycle race across Texas. I have met two people now in the last 3 days who rode competitively in that mid-summer race. One of them (who rode with me 2 days ago) came in 5th out of 10,000 riders!!!! #COASTtoCOASTbicycleride http://www.thisclearbluesky.com .
58 days remain on this 4,000 mile bicycle journey down the east coast and across America (distance has been updated as I’m taking a longer, but faster route). I’m riding 2 days on and 1 day off (that day off is for rain / rest) so that’s 38 actual riding days. On days I’m riding through mountains, progress will be slow. So, on these flatter days now, I am going to try to do 50 – 60 miles if I can pull it off.
Hauling plenty of water. Finding places to camp or cheap motels is a bigger challenge than usual now that I’m crossing into west Texas. Towns are getting few and far between. I’m erring on the side of caution, carrying plenty of water and taking more time to plan for food and shelter. Hoping to link up with more cyclists and / cycling groups as possible. Another group of friendly cyclists is putting me up in town west of Wichita.
I’ve completed 2,278 miles of this journey so far through 11 states. I have 1,722 more miles to go through 4 states. Lots of flat ground so that’s a big help. I’m taking a new “southern tier route”. This is a route used by many coast to coast cyclists and I’ll be on getting that route in New Mexico.
Thanks to the generosity of so many people across the country, this 4,000 mile solo coast to coast bicycle ride has raised $17,200 so far for Bell Socialization which runs the family homeless shelter in my hometown of York, Pennsylvania. If you would like to donate to help homeless families, the GoFundMe link is: https://gofund.me/55b78754 . All donations go straight from GoFundMe to Bell and are tax deductible.
